In his first public remarks since rebels took hold of Tripoli, US President Barack Obama acknowledged the shift in power in the Libyan capital.

“The situation is still very fluid. There remains a degree of uncertainty and there are still regime elements that pose a threat. But this much is clear, the Gaddafi regime is coming to an end and the future of Libya is in the hands of its people.”, the US President said.

Speaking from Martha s vineyard where he is vacationing with his family, obama urged Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to step down.

Obama further said, “Although it is clear Gaddafi s rule is over. He still has the opportunity to reduce further bloodshed by explicitly relinquishing power to the people of Libya and calling for those forces who continue to fight to lay down their arms for the sake of Libya.”

The president also called on the opposition to conduct a peaceful transition — adding that the U.S. looks forward to working with a post-Gaddafi Libya.

“Now, the Libya you deserve is within your reach. Going forward, we will be in close coordination with the TNC to support that outcome and there will be huge challenges ahead, the extraordinary events in Libya remind us that fear can give way to hope and that the power of people striving can bring about a brighter day ” he said.

Martin Luther King Jr. opens in Washington, D.C.

Martin
Monument honouring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. opens in Washington, D.C.
The new statue honouring civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was unveiled in Washington on Monday the first memorial on the Mall not dedicated to a war, president or white man.

Fifteen years after a Congressional Joint Resolution in 1996 to establish a memorial in Washington, D.C. to honor King, the four-acre site on the Tidal Basin between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials opened to the public for the first time.

Visitors will walk through two massive white granite halves of the “Mountain of Despair” to reach the “Stone of Hope,” from which the sculpture of King emerges. The principles of the massive memorial are Justice, Democracy, Hope and Love.
The winning design from an international contest was inspired by the line from King s “I Have a Dream” speech, “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.” The memorial consists of a 30 foot ( meter) King s sculpture. On either side of the mountain, is a 450-foot-long (137.16 meters) wall is inscribed with 14 quotations from the famous orator s speeches, sermons, and writings.

Yixin and a team carved and assembled the stone and mountain from 159 blocks of Atlantic Green granite and Kenoran Sage granite from North America, as well as granite from Asia.

Harry Johnson, President of the martin Luther King Memorial Project told Reuters “America is diversified, so when you come and see Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington in DC, it s not just one race of people. It s not just these old guys who you read about, but here s somebody who people may have touched, may have shook his hand and he is an up to date hero that changed this country and made this country and now the world look more diversified as a way we see the world.”

The memorial will be presented to President Barack Obama and dedicated in a celebration on Sunday August 28, marking the anniversary of the Dream speech delivered from the steps of the nearby Lincoln Memorial 48 years ago.

King, the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize and the leader of the American Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 60s, led a peaceful march on Washington in 1963. A crowd of 250,000 heard his DREAM speech at the march, five years before his assassination in Memphis on April 4, 1968.

A joint venture team broke ground on the site nearly five years ago, and the “Build the Dream” Campaign of the National Memorial Project Foundation, $115 of the $120 million needed.

William Line, from the National Park Service said “We couldn t be more delighted, happy, proud, but also humbled about the fact that we are the caretakers of this wonderful memorial.”

Sharapova
Maria Sharapova reach into semi-finals for the second straight year at Cincinnati Open.
Sharapova, seeded fourth, defeated the 10th-seeded Australian 6-3, 6-2 and next faces either second-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia or unseeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova.

She will face second-seeded Vera Zvonareva, who let a second-set advantage slip but eventually put away unseeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 7-6 (8/6).

“I played a really great match and did many good things today which caused her trouble,” Sharapova said. “I was aggressive. I didn t give her much time to do things that she likes to do when she plays well, felt like I controlled most of the points.”
Sharapova was pleased to be playing better in her last tournament before the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year that starts in New York on August 29.
“Coming here, I said that it was really important to play these matches,” she said. “Obviously the more matches you play against different opponents and winning them gives you more confidence going into New York … to be playing good tennis before New York is really important.”
Sharapova won a challenge on match point to improve to 3-0 this year and 9-0 in her career against Stosur.

Jennifer
America: Hollywood famous actor justin Theroux will never marry actress-girlfriend Jennifer Aniston.

Theroux began dating Aniston earlier this year and there have been reports that the couple are set to tie the knot very soon. However, Warden insists that the actor, who was with girlfriend Heid Bivensfor 14 years before dating Aniston, is not the kind of person who will get married. “Justin will never marry her.

He’s not the marrying type – as you can see from the 14-year relationship he was in that didn’t end in marriage. He is not the kind of guy to be owned,” contactmusic quoted Warden as saying. “Jen is the complete opposite of Justin. She’s all about Malibuand shopping and trying to stay young while Justin is about being an artist. The last place Jen would want to go in New Yorkwould be a dive bar,” he added.

Israeli helicopters attack in Egypt 3 soldiers killed

Israel_attacks
Egypt: Israeli helicopter attack expressed anger over the deaths of three of its soldiers killed

The deaths apparently occurred as Israeli helicopters were pursuing Palestinian militants across the Egyptian border. Israelis say Egypt must bring a  no-man s land  in the Sinai under control.

As Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants continued to clash Friday, Egypt expressed anger over the deaths of at least three of its soldiers apparently killed by Israeli helicopters pursuing militants across the Israeli-Egyptian border a day earlier.

The Egyptian government submitted a formal protest to Israel and called for an urgent investigation of the deaths of the soldiers, the Egyptian state news agency said. Officials also closed until further notice the Al Awja crossing between Egypt and Israel, used for the passage of trade and exports, the agency said.

Israel said it killed seven militants in gunfights Thursday. It followed that Thursday night and Friday morning with at least a dozen airstrikes on militant targets in Gaza, including a suspected weapons-manufacturing site and tunnels to Egypt, military officials said.

In Gaza, Palestinian officials said nine people were killed, including two top commanders of the Popular Resistance Committees, an armed group that Israel accused of orchestrating the attacks in Israel. Two children were also killed, according to hospital officials.

Nadal won the match by 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 7-6(9)

Nadal
Nadal survived a three-set, three-tiebreaker match against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco on Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (9) victory that kept him on court for 3 hours, 38 minutes. Then, he played a doubles match that went an hour and 10 minutes, followed by interviews.

How d he feel?
“Fantastic,” he said, smiling broadly.

The top three players in the men s bracket advanced Thursday. Djokovic beat qualifier Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3 in a ragged match, improving to 31-0 on hard courts this year and 55-1 overall. Federer knocked off James Blake 6-4, 6-1 in the evening.

Nobody had a day quite like the second-seeded Nadal, who arrived for the Cincinnati-area tournament hoping to get a lot of time on court this week. He missed nearly a month after hurting his left foot at Wimbledon, where he reached the finals and lost to Novak Djokovic.
He got his wish, all at once.

Playing on a sunny, mid-80s afternoon, Nadal blew four match points before finally ending the match. It was only the second best-of-three matches in Nadal s career that featured three tiebreakers.

“I would like to have one hour less than I have, but it s a positive one,” said Nadal, now 12-0 against Verdasco.
After taking a few questions, Nadal said politely, “I have to go to rest.”

Nadal s next match will be against seventh-seeded Mardy Fish, who beat Richard Gasquet 7-5, 7-5 with far less effort.

“If you want to play someone like Rafa, you hope that he plays a match that s four hours long before you play him,” Fish said. “I mean, that s as physical as it gets. It s hot out there, so I m sure he ll be pretty tired.”

Djokovic has played a lot of matches lately, and it showed in his performance on Thursday. He pumped his fist to get the crowd involved near the end.

“It s been very slow, kind of an ugly match to play and watch, so I think we really needed to engage the crowd at the end,” Djokovic said. “I ve played so many matches, and they ve caught up to me. It s OK.

“There are days like this when you don t feel like playing, but I hate losing. That s what makes me motivated on the court.”
